What Makes a Tourbillon Affordable? And How Atelier Loreti Made One

What Makes a Tourbillon Affordable? And How Atelier Loreti Made One

What Is a Tourbillon and Why Is It Considered High Horology?

The tourbillon is one of the most prestigious and complex mechanisms in watchmaking. Originally created by Abraham-Louis Breguet, it was designed to reduce positional errors caused by gravity by placing the regulating organ inside a rotating cage.

But beyond its technical purpose, the tourbillon has become a symbol of mastery.

Unlike standard mechanical movements, it requires:

  • a complete redesign of the regulating system
  • extreme precision at a microscopic level
  • advanced engineering and assembly

Because of this, the tourbillon is widely considered a cornerstone of high horology, representing the highest level of mechanical watchmaking expertise.

Why Are Tourbillons So Expensive?

Tourbillons are expensive because they combine complexity, craftsmanship, and exclusivity in a way few other complications do.

Mechanical Complexity

A tourbillon is not a simple feature added to a watch. It requires a fully reengineered regulating system. The rotating cage must remain perfectly balanced while housing multiple sensitive components in constant motion.

High-Level Craftsmanship

Traditionally, tourbillons involve extensive manual assembly and finishing. Precision at this level requires highly skilled watchmakers and significant time investment.

Limited Production

Due to their complexity, tourbillons are produced in low volumes. Lower production increases costs and reinforces exclusivity.

Luxury Positioning

Tourbillons have long been positioned as elite watchmaking symbols. Pricing reflects not only manufacturing costs but also brand prestige, retail markups, and distribution layers.

As a result, most traditional Swiss tourbillons start around $30,000 and can reach well into six figures.

What Are the Most Affordable Tourbillons on the Market?

In recent years, a more accessible category of tourbillons has started to emerge. While still far from entry-level mechanical watches, these timepieces sit significantly below traditional Swiss pricing.

Tourbillon Price Benchmark

Today’s tourbillon market can be understood across three broad price segments, typically range between:

ï  Ultra high-end Swiss tourbillons: $50,000 to $100,000+

ï  High-end luxury tourbillons: $10,000 to $40,000
ï  Mid-range accessible tourbillons: $800 to $5,000

At the ultra high end, traditional Swiss tourbillons from maisons such as Breguet and Audemars Piguet often sit far above the $30,000 mark and can extend well into six figures. On Chrono24, current Breguet tourbillon listings include examples above $80,000, $200,000, and even $500,000, while Audemars Piguet Royal Oak tourbillon listings can exceed €185,000 or $469,400. (Chrono24)

Below that sits a high-end luxury segment, where the complication remains exclusive but is relatively more accessible than traditional haute horlogerie. TAG Heuer fits more naturally into this tier, with a current Carrera Tourbillon listed at $34,200 through Watches of Switzerland. Some Behrens models also move into this premium territory, with official prices such as $13,500 for the Perigee and $17,700 for the Kung Fu Titanium Edition shown on the brand’s website. (Watches of Switzerland)

A newer accessible segment has also emerged, spanning roughly $800 to $5,000. This is where brands use industrialized production, alternative movement architectures, and more efficient manufacturing models to bring the tourbillon to a broader audience. CIGA Design belongs clearly in this segment, with official Central Tourbillon pricing shown at $2,699 and $3,999. (CIGA design)

Atelier Loreti takes a different approach. Positioned among the most accessible tourbillons on the market, with the Celestial Tourbillon Collection priced between $850 and $1,050, the focus is not on reducing the essence of the complication, but on rethinking how it is produced. By industrializing the mechanical architecture while preserving key horological standards, Atelier Loreti aims to deliver a level of mechanical integrity and refinement typically associated with higher-priced tourbillons.

What Defines an Affordable Tourbillon?

Lower pricing is typically achieved through:

  • industrialized production
  • alternative movement architectures
  • selective finishing
  • direct-to-consumer distribution

Instead of replicating traditional luxury models, these watches focus on preserving the core identity of the tourbillon while optimizing production.

A New Market Segment

This shift has created a new category:

  • not traditional luxury
  • not experimental low-cost
  • but a middle ground focused on accessible mechanical legitimacy

This is where Atelier Loreti positions itself.

How Did Atelier Loreti Make the Celestial Tourbillon More Affordable?

Atelier Loreti’s answer lies in reengineering the path to the complication itself.

The L.1T Caliber: Rethinking the Tourbillon

At the heart of the Celestial Tourbillon is the L.1T caliber, developed over more than three years with one mission: to make the most prestigious complication in watchmaking more accessible without stripping away its mechanical legitimacy.

To achieve that, Atelier Loreti started from a proven Japanese automatic architecture derived from the 8215 movement, then redesigned it extensively into an authentic tourbillon movement.

The transformation is structural:

  • the mainplate was fully reworked
  • the tourbillon is integrated into a redesigned barrel bridge
  • the fourth wheel was repositioned to drive a one-minute tourbillon
  • the regulating organ was replaced with a new balance wheel, pallet fork, and escape wheel

This allowed the movement to evolve from 21,600 to 28,800 vibrations per hour, reaching an optimal 4Hz frequency.

Technical Details

  • True rotating tourbillon cage at 6 o’clock
  • 4Hz frequency (28,800 vibrations per hour)
  • 35-hour power reserve
  • Automatic winding system
  • Over 200 components

A Different Engineering Philosophy

The L.1T does not simplify the tourbillon. It redefines how it is built.

By combining:

  • a reliable base architecture (Miyota 8215-based)
  • deep structural redesign
  • optimized production

Atelier Loreti created a mechanically authentic tourbillon while significantly reducing cost barriers.

The goal was clear: Make a true 4Hz tourbillon accessible below the $1,000 threshold.

Available Models

Each dial offers a unique expression, from cosmic meteorite textures to deep, minimalist onyx finishes.

Why This Changes High Horology

The Celestial Tourbillon represents a shift in how value is defined in watchmaking.

Traditionally, high complication meant high price. Today, value is increasingly driven by:

  • engineering decisions
  • movement architecture
  • material selection
  • production efficiency
  • brand transparency

Atelier Loreti does not try to replicate traditional luxury models. It proposes a different approach: one where accessibility and mechanical legitimacy can coexist.

Conclusion

Tourbillons have long been one of the most exclusive complications in watchmaking, defined by complexity, craftsmanship, and prestige.

They are expensive for valid reasons.

But they are no longer unreachable.

By reengineering the movement, optimizing production, and removing traditional cost layers, Atelier Loreti has created a new way to experience high horology.

The tourbillon is no longer only a symbol of exclusivity.

It is becoming something more powerful:

A new entry point into high horology.
